How much should you exercise?

  • Start slowly and build up to an exercise routine with gentle movements
  • Do some stretching or warm-up before exercising.
  • Wear loose, comfortable shoes and clothing
  • Drink a glass of water before and after your exercise routine. In summer, have a lot of other fluids too, like nimbu paani, coconut water, or aam ka panna.
  • Take adequate rest by sleeping for 6-8 hours at night

While exercising, it is important to exercise at a level that will improve fitness without over-exerting. As a rule of the thumb, always exercise to a limit where, if you were to speak out or shout, someone should be able to hear you.

Consult a doctor before you exercise, if you have:

  • Blood pressure of 250 mm systolic or 120 mm diastolic or more. In such a situation the blood pressure needs to be controlled first before you start exercising.
  • An advanced eye disease
  • Plasma glucose levels are more than 250 mg/dl. In such a situation blood glucose needs to be controlled first.
  • Experienced any warning signals such as pain, tingling, or breathlessness.

Are those shoes meant for walking? Quick note on footwear

  • Make sure that your footwear is comfortable
  • Wear cotton or woolen socks depending on the weather. Nylon socks should be avoided as they do not absorb sweat easily.
  • If you have diabetes, ensure that you have checked the inside of the shoes with your hands. Most diabetics are recommended to wear a size bigger than their actual size.
