Who develops it?

Usually children or young adults.

Usually overweight adults over age 30.

What is the cause?

Pancreas becomes unable to make insulin.

Body becomes unable to use insulin as it should. Insulin action and utilization is inefficient.

How does a person feel?

Very thirsty, hungry and tired and needs to urinate often. May have stomach pain and become very ill if diabetes is not treated right away.

Detection of ketones in the urine is hallmark of Type I diabetes.

May not have symptoms. May not notice anything unusual, or may be tired and thirsty and need to urinate often.

Absence of ketones in the urine.

What is done to control diabetes?

Healthy diet, exercise and daily insulin injections are mandatory.

Healthy diet and exercise. Sometimes, diabetes pills or insulin injections may be required.
