Quit Now! Tips on your fingertips
Out of sight, out of mind!
Don’t let cigarettes, paan and jarda, ash trays be easily available. Keep tobacco products and aids for use in a place where you have to make a real effort to get them. This may be in another room of the house, such as in the loft of your children’s room where you may think twice about reaching. These could be places where you don’t go to very often such as inside a trunk. Every time you have to use tobacco having to make a conscious effort will deter you. You may have to get up, walk and get it.
What’s your trigger?
When you know yourself you will find ways to cope with this ‘need.’ Is it the company of people? Do you smoke socially? Do you smoke when consuming alcohol? When you’re trying to quit, it may help to be away from people when they use tobacco so that you do not feel tempted and can maintain your will power to give up. Do you consume tobacco when you are tense, or when you are working late, to pep you up and to give that extra energy? For that try to put something in the mouth like chewing gum, sweets, peppermint, lozenges and practice deep breathing. Whenever you have that craving try deep breathing. Having a glass of water and exercising also helps to decrease the craving.
Think of your children and loved ones
When you feel like taking tobacco, think of your children and the effect on their future.
